Diet to reverse diabetes forever

Reverse diabetes (Type 2) by proper diet.

Throughout the world people have been suffering with diabetes at larger amount. It has become a global health issue.  Many medical and other concerned agencies have been working to fight this health problem. But the problem is increasing day by day leading to health and financial loss of the people worldwide. It is necessary to reverse diabetes with all means.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes mellitis (Type 2) is a chronic hereditary metabolic disorder that prevents the body to utilize glucose completely or partially. Diabetes Mellitus is a health problem in which there is impairment of pancreatic cell function leading to low or loss of production of insulin, or insulin resistance even if the insulin production is at optimal level. It is a disease of the pancreas, an organ behind the stomach that produces the hormone insulin.

Insulin governs glucose utilization and metabolism in the body. Insulin helps the body utilize food for energy. In diabetes, the pancreas either cannot produce enough insulin or uses the insulin incorrectly i.e. insulin resistance, or both. So in both cases, impaired pancreatic cells function and insulin resistance, we see an increase in blood glucose level than normal range. So it is necessary to reverse diabetes.

What are the causes of diabetes?

The deficiency or diminished effectiveness of endogenous insulin is the main reason. There are many predisposing factors and causes of this diabetes disease like family history of diabetes or inherited tendency, overweight or obesity, physical stress on the body as in surgery or illness, use of certain medications, including steroid, blood pressure medications, injury to pancreas by infection, tumor, surgery or accident, autoimmune disease, high blood pressure, abnormal blood cholesterol or triglyceride levels, high alcohol intake with habitual drinking for long period, smoking, pregnancy,     improper diet, lack of exercise, mental anxiety & stress, loss of proper and deep sleep for 7-8 hrs., behavior, genetic factor, etc. It may be possible to reverse diabetes.

What is the ill effect of diabetes on health?

Diabetes has a detrimental effect on health if not managed and treated properly. It is characterised by an abnormally elevated level of blood glucose (hyperglycsemia) and by excretion of excess of glucose in urine (glycosuria).

Symptoms are polyuria, polydipsia, lethargy, frequent recurring infections with slow recovery rates, slow wound healing, itchy skin, yeast infections and dry mouth.  Symptoms of type 1 diabetes are acute with a short duration and characterised by weight loss, dehydration, ketonuria and hypertension.

Increased level of glucose affects all visceral organs leading to chronic conditions like especially neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy and cardiomyopathy etc.  All these problems may be cured after reversal of diabetes.

What is the role of diet in diabetes?

Out of the above causes, a proper diet plays an important and vital role to keep our blood sugar (glucose) level in normal range. Dietary control is an integral part of management for the control of diabetes. Because most of the glucose in the blood comes from carbohydrates in the diet.

If we manage to eat less simple carbohydrates, our blood glucose level will be limited.  But sufficient carbohydrates are required to supply energy needed to the body. Carbohydrates should form an integral part ofthe diet although care needs to be paid to the kind of carbohydrates chosen. Research has shown that carbohydrate restriction impairs insulin sensitivity which can be corrected and reversed by following a diet with increased carbohydrates.

When carbohydrates are increased in the diet along with an increased amount of fibre, the binding capability of insulin improves along with an increase in insulin receptor binding. Diet rich in complex carbohydrates and dietary fibre is beneficial for diabetes. Fibre is the indigestible part of plant foods products, and fibre has an important role in the human digestive process. Fibre aids in weight control, lowers blood glucose, decreases serum cholesterol and triglyceride value, lowers insulin requirement, increases peripheral tissue insulin sensitivity.

Food items having low to medium glycemic indices are used to prepare diet recipe. This may help to reverse diabetes.

What is our routine diet in India?

People in India mostly eat more carbohydrates rather than protein in their diet . Also in their daily diet they eat more soluble (simple) carbohydrates than non-soluble carbohydrates (complex) or dietary fiber. This increases the blood sugar level of the person. So if we manage to eat a diet with complex carbohydrates or dietary fiber, our blood glucose may be reduced in diabetic patients and may reverse diabetes.
